do you ever just

wanna grab someone by the shoulders

look them in the eyes and say

“no one cares”

Family Portrait, Part 2

A frame, coated with dust, sits on the basement shelf

A mother and father look straight at the lens.

The father’s look of distance, a clue of what’s to come.

The mother’s look of care, towards the baby cradled in her arms, smiling, not knowing what’s ahead.

The baby girl thinks, this is my family, forever it will be.

Another photograph, hangs on the living room wall.

Shows the image of a broken family.

The father? Air fills up the space where he should be.

The mother looks off into the distance.

Tense, worry shows on her face, wondering how her daughter truly feels.

The daughter, no longer a baby

A young woman, looking straight ahead.

She smiles, just like before, thinking,

This is my family, it’s all I want it to be.
